General Tso's Tofu
Ingredients
For the Tofu:
- 400 g firm tofu pressed and cut into cubes
- 60 g cornstarch
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Vegetable oil for frying
For the Sauce:
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce
- 3 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 3 tablespoons cane sugar
- 120 ml vegetable broth
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch diluted in 2 tablespoons water
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
For the Garnish:
- Green onions sliced
- Sesame seeds
Instructions
Preparing the Tofu:
- Coat the tofu cubes with cornstarch, salt, and pepper.
- Heat oil in a pan and fry the tofu cubes until they are golden and crispy. While the tofu is frying, you can start on the sauce.
- Remove the tofu and drain on paper towels. Keep the pan for later use in the recipe.
Preparing the Sauce:
- While the tofu is browning, take a small saucepan and mix together the soy sauce, rice vinegar, cane sugar, vegetable broth, and tomato paste.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat.
- Add the ginger, garlic, and red pepper flakes. Simmer for a few minutes.
- Pour the sauce into the pan that was used to cook the tofu and stir in the cornstarch and water mixture. Stir until the sauce thickens. Then add the sesame oil.
Assembly:
- Add the fried tofu back into the sauce in the pan and toss to coat the cubes well.
- Serve immediately, garnished with green onions and sesame seeds.
