Peace, Love & Donuts

The history of the donut is long and fascinating, dating back several centuries; its exact origins are still a subject of debate, but it is highly likely that it was influenced by donuts of Dutch origin.

The history of donuts as we know them today is closely tied to the United States: Dutch immigrants brought a recipe for fried pastries called “olykoeks” (meaning “oil cakes”) to the United States. Over time, olykoeks evolved into the donuts we know today. The modern spelling “doughnut” appeared in the early 19th century; the term refers to the dough used to make these pastries.

A key innovation in the history of donuts was the invention of the central hole. According to legend, in 1847, a woman named Elizabeth Gregory began poking holes in the center of the pastries to cook them more evenly. This led to the creation of donuts with a central hole, making them lighter and easier to cook.

Today, donuts are enjoyed worldwide in many different shapes and flavors. They are savored for breakfast or as a dessert, and new creative variations continue to appear in bakeries and donut chains around the world.
